SEPECAT (Société Européenne de Production de l'Avion d'Ecole de Combat et d'Appui Tactique) is a joint company of Breguet Aviation (France) and British Aircraft Corporation (BAC), formed in May 1966. At the end of April 2007 all remaining Royal Air Force Jaguar aircraft have been retired after 33 years from active service. The Jaguar is being replaced by the much more capable multi-role Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. RAF Coltishall, the spiritual home to the Jaguar, was already closed on 30 November 2006, because this installation was not chosen as a future Eurofighter Typhoon base. The base closure ceremony included a flypast by four Jaguars from 6 Squadron at RAF Coningsby, which is now home of the Eurofighter Typhoon. The other Jaguar flying units RAF 16(R) Squadron and 54 Squadron were deactivated on 11 May 2005. RAF 41(F) Squadron, also flying the Jaguar, was re-established as 41(R) Squadron on 31 March 2006 and is now flying Tornado and Harrier aircraft. |
