The Boeing T-43A aircraft, also known as the "Gator" and often called "the flying classroom", is a military version of the Boeing 737-253, and has served as a training platform for navigators, now known as combat systems officers, since 1973. On 17 September 2010 the last United States Air Force combat systems officer training aircraft was retired from service in a ceremony at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. Originally based at Mather AFB, California, the Boeing T-43 has been in service at Randolph AFB since 1992. The commander of the 12th Flying Training Wing (12 FTW) at Randolph AFB said, the T-43 has been a safe and reliable aircraft throughout its 37-year history. It has flown 500,000 training hours and 100,000 training sorties, all mishap free. The training of the combat systems officers (CSO) will be transferred to Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, where the students will fly the T-6 Texan or the T-1 Jayhawk. The T-43 retirement ceremony concluded with a final composite flyby of Randolph AFB aircraft including the Boeing T-43A Gator. |
