History was made on 22 August 2019, as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team "Red Arrows" have taken to the Manhattan skies in a 19-aircraft flypast down the Hudson River and around the Statue of Liberty. For the first time in history the Red Arrows joined with United States Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron "Thunderbirds" for this majestic display. The Red Arrows painted the skies with signature red, white and blue smoke trails during the aerial parade at 2,500-3,000 ft.
The British aircraft flew in a large formation, led by the Lockheed F-16 Fighting Falcon of the Thunderbirds demonstration team, followed by the nine Red Arrows British Aerospace BAe Hawk, then two Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II and a pair of Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor behind. The formation of aircraft approached from the north side of the city, over the Hudson River, before passing Manhattan on the left. On reaching New York Harbour, the jets made a sweeping right turn near the Statue of Liberty and proceeded back up the river for a second pass.
