On 22 March 2011 RAF Leuchars in Scotland held a parade saluting the proud service of 111(Fighter) Squadron. The Squadron honourably disbands at the end of March 2011 in line with the long-planned retirement from RAF service of the Tornado F.3. The Tornado F.3 is the Air Defence Variant (ADV) of the Tornado. Developed from the Tornado GR.1 ground-attack aircraft, the Tornado F.3 used more powerful Rolls-Royce RB199 turbofan engines, had 600 kg (1,320 lb) of additional internal fuel and a Foxhunter fire control radar. It first flew in RAF colours in 1986, and 111(F) Squadron have marked these 25 years of admirable service with a commemorative paint scheme for one of its aircraft tailfins. The Tornado F.3 officially retires from service at the end of March 2011 when its air defence role at RAF Leuchars will officially pass to 6 Squadron and the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.
