Avro Vulcan XH558 (military serial XH558, civil aircraft registration G-VLCN) "The Spirit Of Great Britain" was the last remaining airworthy example of the 134 Avro Vulcan jet powered delta winged strategic nuclear bomber aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. It was the last Vulcan in military service, and the last to fly at all after 1986.
The aircraft, which once carried Britain's nuclear deterrent, took off from Doncaster Robin Hood Airport for a short final trip on 28 October 2015. Martin Withers, who led the 1982 Vulcan raids on the Falklands, was the pilot for the final flight. The XH558, which first came into RAF service in 1960, has been kept in the air by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust since 2007. The volunteer trust has accepted advice from supporting companies that they no longer have the expertise to keep it airworthy as engineers retire from the industry. XH558 will stay in its Cold War hangar at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield - once RAF Finningley.
